Woman Behind Haitian Flag Commemorated at Flag Day Concert – Haitian Times

The Haitian Times
Bridging the gap
In commemoration of Haitian Flag Day, three Haitian songstresses will take to the stage in New York City to celebrate the woman behind the flag — Catherine Flon.
On May 20, Phyllisia Ross, Riva Precil, and Sherlee “Skai” Debrosse will perform at New York’s legendary Sounds of Brazil (SOB’s)club and restaurant for a night of culture and pride.
Flon, the goddaughter of Haitian revolutionary leader Jean Jacques Dessalines, sewed the first Haitian flag in 1803, marking the then-slave country’s quest for liberation and freedom.
“We are proud to commemorate this amazing day with a solid line up of Haitian women,” Gashford Guillaume, co-organizer of the event said. “They were the pillars of the Haitian revolution and today remain the support nexus throughout the world at large.
Ross is a classically-trained pianist, who has made a name for herself on the international stage with big name collaborations like Jah Cure, Marvin, Ne-Yo and the Game.  Precil is known for her sultry tunes and dance moves that incorporate Haitian Vodou influences. Debrosse is a rising songstress in the HMI, signaling a new wave of talent coming into the industry.
“We are proud to present three Haitian-American queens, female artists that are the most dominant in today’s Haitian Music Industry worldwide,” Guillaume said.
The concert, sponsored by the Haitian American Caucus and SOB’s, begins at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here.
