THE Ohio-based missionary group Christian Aid Ministries (CAM) is calling for sustained and continuing prayer for the 12 adults and five children kidnapped in Haiti the Saturday before last as they travelled home from visiting an orphanage (News, 22 October).
The kidnappers, believed to be the “400 Mawozo” gang, known for targeting religious groups, are reported to be demanding a $17-million ransom for the group, which they are threatening to kill.
CAM said in a statement on Monday: “We are seeking God’s direction for a resolution, and authorities are seeking ways to help.” The authorities’ involvement was confirmed on Tuesday by the White House press secretary, Jen Psaki, who told a news conference, “The FBI is part of a co-ordinated effort to get the US citizens involved to safety. We are not going to go into too much detail on that but can confirm their engagement.”
President Biden had been been briefed, Ms Psaki said, and was receiving regular updates.
