Haitian Foreign Minister Jean Victor Génésus has thanked the “strong and courageous gesture” of Colombian President Gustavo Petro for apologizing for the involvement of Colombian mercenaries in the assassination of former Haitian President Jovenel Moise in July 2021.
The Haitian diplomatic representative thus referred to the words of Petro, who on Wednesday reported on his Twitter profile that, during a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, he had apologized to Haiti for that event.
For his part, the former prime minister under Moise, Claude Joseph, has praised Petro’s words, although he considers that “it is not enough” and has requested the “full cooperation” of Bogota in the investigations.
“Haiti needs the full cooperation of your government to help us find the intellectual author of the assassination of President Mosie. Who financed them? How did they get the money?”, has also launched on Twitter the former prime minister.
On July 7, 2021, several mercenaries stormed Haiti’s presidential residence, taking the life of President Moise and seriously wounding his wife.
Petro’s message of apology comes more than a year after it became known that many of the culprits in the assassination of the Haitian leader were Colombian mercenaries, already arrested by the authorities of the Caribbean country.
