Demonstrations are likely in urban centers across Haiti from July 7, and marches have been confirmed in the capital July 7-8, to mark the one-year anniversary of President Jovenel Moise’s assassination. In Port-au-Prince, activists will gather at Carrefour de l’Aeroport and march to Champs de Mars via Delmas Highway and Delmas 60 on July 7. Marches near Moise’s former private residence in Pelerin 5 are also likely July 7. Activists have also called for demonstrations in the capital on July 8, without providing details on the locations and times.
Gatherings are likely in urban centers, especially near government buildings, including those of foreign diplomatic representation, and main roads. Gatherings are also likely in Cap-Haitien, near Moise’s hometown. Officials will likely deploy security forces to monitor protests, and traffic disruptions are likely nationwide. Clashes and violence involving security forces, protesters, and gangs are possible.
The protests take place in the midst of significant political, security, and economic upheaval in Haiti. The assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021 created a political power vacuum and gang violence has increased significantly. This violence can include shootings, arson, and kidnapping for ransom. Haiti has also been deeply affected by rising prices for imported fuel, food, and other goods, contributing to the frequency of civil unrest.
Avoid all demonstrations and concentrations of security personnel. Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks or protester groups. Plan on disruptions to transit across Haiti. Confirm all appointments. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations. Comply with directives given by authorities.
