James Louis has called New Jersey home ever since immigrating from Haiti in 1993, at the age of 17. After a stint in Long Branch, New Jersey, he moved north to Irvington with his wife when he began working as an engineer with the United States Army.
In 2006, when the couple started having children, they bought a home in neighboring Union.
“I wanted to make sure [my children] went to a good school system, so that’s the main reason I moved,” said Louis, who is president of the Union Haitian American Civic Association. He lives in town with his wife and three children.
