May 18 commemorates the day in 1803 that the new nation of Haiti adopted its official flag.
A group of local members of the Haitian community in Norwich gathered Monday at City Hall Plaza in lieu of the annual Haitian Cultural Festival to hear a proclamation from the city council read by alderman Derrell Wilson and raise the flag.
The Haitian cultural festival would have been the first of 10 cultural festivals organized by Global City Norwich but was canceled due to coronavirus precautions.
