Caribbean ICT watch: Guyana, Haiti, Dominican Rep, Jamaica – BNamericas English

Guyanese telco GTT plans to accelerate its fiber roll-out to achieve the goal of 75% of homes passed by 2025. 
“By 2024, on top of the 22bn Guyanese dollars [US$105mn] invested in fiber in Guyana so far, we will have invested an additional 10bn dollars to ensure three out of every four households in Guyana can choose GTT Fiber,” said Damian Blackburn, GTT’s CEO, according to local press.
Over 45% of Guyanese homes are covered with GTT fiber optics. The company expects to pass the mark of 100,000 shortly.

The political and social crisis in Haiti is having an impact on Digicel’s telecommunication services. The company said that many of its optical fibers have been stolen or damaged because of gang violence. 
Violence has also affected maintenance and repairs. 
Last week, Digicel also said it lost its international connections. Local press reported on September 12 that there had been seven optical fiber cuts in five days.

Dominican Republic regulator Indotel and telecom operator Wind Telecom launched a new fiber optics network in Cienfuegos, Santiago Oeste. 
The infrastructure will help connect “thousands” of homes and businesses with internet, voice over IP and entertainment, according to an Indotel statement. 
The new network is part of a compensation agreement with the State involving expansion projects in Bonito, Monte Rico, Ensanche Mella, Alma Rosa and Cienfuegos. 
Details of the other projects have not been provided.

Flow (Cable & Wireless) has begun to offer eSIM service in Jamaica. The embedded SIM card is integrated into the phone from the manufacturer and it offers customers greater usability and flexibility, as well as safety and sustainability features, local press reported. 
The technology is accessible via compatible iPhone and Samsung smartphones.
