Best global eats that’s spicing up Staten Island – with a Haitian Creole twist – SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In the West Brighton section of Castleton Avenue, a new restaurant has spiced up an already vibrant food destination for the borough — Delmas 48. A recent SILIVE.com/Advance story about Staten Island’s first sit-down Haitian eatery was so widely read, we had to go back for another taste very soon afterward.
In this Staten Island dining room, Blondine Deprinvil presents her brand of Haitian cooking. A dedicated vegan, Blondine does serve traditional Haitian Creole meat dishes — combos of rice and chicken, pork or fish (respectively plat diri a poul, a griot and a pawson) and a Caribbean-inspired beef burger. She is particularly delighted to share her take on Diri Djon Djon, black rice-based comfort fare with fried pork, chicken or red snapper.

But the vegan dishes are where Blondine’s menu shines particularly — a lightly crisped casserole of backed mac ‘n’ cheese, spinach patties, fried green plantains and “Island fries” aka jackfruit. The latter has an almost melt-in-the-mouth feel with the texture of super tender fried chicken strips. A spaghetti dish typically made in Haitian homes on Saturday mornings, Blondine presents with diced plant-based sausage and serves on the menu daily.

Indeed, Blondine received feedback from Haitian food lovers across the region. A few complimentary notes have crossed the Advance/Silive.com’s transom including one with words of encouragement for the new business from a fellow chef.
She wrote, “I know how much hard work and dedication you’ve put into all this. Most of all, the magic portions. Love, I am so proud and happy for you, and your staff. From decor to menu, I love it all.”
