Bellmore-Merrick District Raises More Than $3,500 For Haitian Relief – Patch
MERRICK, NY — Students at Calhoun High School created a district-wide fundraiser to support Haiti.
It started as a passing idea from Nickolas Mascary, a Calhoun student and member of the school’s Racial Equity Club. He suggested turning the initiative into a larger endeavor.
Other schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District with $3,800 in donations going to the nonprofit organization Hope for Haiti during the 111-day undertaking.
“Out of 28+ events, one event stood out the most; a districtwide, Hope Day,” explained faculty adviser and Calhoun social studies teacher Beth Finneran. “Students and faculty members were encouraged across the district to wear blue and participate in a bake sale on GivingTuesday.”
The bake sale raised more than $900.
