Laura Silsby, a Baptist missionary from Idaho accused of trying to smuggle 33 Haitian children to the United States for adoption following the massive January earthquake, was freed Monday after spending three and a 1/2 months behind bars.
AFP- Laura Silsby, the leader of a group of US missionaries arrested trying to leave Haiti with 33 children following the massive January earthquake here, was freed Monday, her lawyer told AFP.

Silsby, whose three-and-a-half months behind bars in Port-au-Prince was deemed by authorities to cover the “irregular travel” charges against her, was to fly to Florida later Monday, said lawyer Shiller Roy.

Silsby was described as the leader of a group of 10 US Baptists stopped at the border with the Dominican Republic with the children who were purported to be orphans.

Although she was initially accused of child abduction, the charges were revised to “irregular travel,” and prosecutors had asked on Thursday for a six-month prison term for her.
