Following two recent interdictions off the coast of Florida, the United States Coast Guard said on Tuesday that 110 Haitian migrants had been returned home.
Two overcrowded sailing vessels seized on December 11 and last Thursday contained the migrants.
According to the US Coast Guard, both vessels had men, women, and children.
Captain Robert Kinsey, Coast Guard District Seven stated, “this year, we’ve needlessly lost 13 lives to the sea due to people choosing to attempt maritime migration in grossly overcrowded and unsafe vessels.”
He continued, “Today, our crews are searching for nine more people recklessly taking to the sea. It is heartbreaking to know that families will be sitting down to celebrate the holidays without those lost loved ones. Please encourage those you care about to choose a safe and legal pathway for migration.”
The US Coast Guard said that 869 Haitian migrants had been intercepted since the beginning of October, compared to 7,175 throughout the previous fiscal year.
